Aj aj, beklagade han sig lite tyst efter att han trampat på de brinnande pinnarna som han jonglerat med och sedan kastat på marken. Vi skrattade.

Det var meningen att vi skulle skratta, förstås. Föreställningen var för vår skull. Det var vi som betalade, han som uppträdde.

Vi såg en polynesisk eldshow. Två män klädda i vad man får anta var traditionella kläder, eller åtminstone skulle se ut som det – barfota, höftskynken, bar överkropp med stora tatueringar, och halsband av något som såg ut som vass – pratade om kokosnötter och visade hur man gjorde upp eld med pinnar. Och sedan dansade de med den, elden, till rytmen av trummor.

Underhållande och fint. Men också lite obehagligt.

För mannen med elden skämtade under hela föreställningen om vad det var han egentligen gjorde. Han pratade om ’min hemö Samoa’, för att sedan erkänna att han var från New York. Och vi skrattade. Han frågade om vi ville se eld och när vi på hans uppmaning ropade ja, så sa han med svag röst five dollars. Och vi skrattade. Efter att han bränt sig när han släckte elden med fotsulorna frågade han om vi var nöjda. Och det var vi ju. Det var bra, sa han och lät plågad. Och vi skrattade.

Självklart var hans repliker väl inövade, och publiken svarade precis som den skulle göra. Men den där föreställningen lämnade ändå en känsla av obehag efter sig.

De där skämten handlade om kommersialiseringen av ursprungskulturer, om hur vi som besökare i vår iver att få se och uppleva något annorlunda och ’äkta’ också reproducerar mönster från kolonialismen.

För alla kulturer är inte lika i det avseendet.

Det räcker med att titta på Sverige. När utländska hotellbesökare i Sverige bjuds på luciatåg i december så är det nog få som upplever det som problematiskt eller obehagligt. Att de vill ta del av vår kultur är så självklart för oss att vi knappt ens ger dem något val. Kom och titta så fina traditioner vi har! Det är tämligen oproblematiskt eftersom Sverige och svenskarna har en stark kulturell ställning.

Däremot har jag hört flera samiska bekanta uttrycka tveksamhet kring turistverksamhet som på olika sätt visar upp den samiska kulturen. För skillnaden mellan att visa upp och att exploatera är ibland hårfin. Och vad är det besökarna vill se? Kulturen såsom den faktiskt är, eller en lite mer uppklädd, showig variant? Samerna har en historia av underordning och förtryck, och det finns verkligen inget motsägelsefullt i att stoltheten över den egna kulturen stundtals paras med en ovilja att göra business på den.

Den kommersiella logiken innebär att man anpassar sig till vad publiken vill ha. Och när publiken till stora delar består av de forna kolonisatörerna så blir det en slags repetition av historien, om än i en annan form. Då är det inte konstigt om det kan kännas obehagligt, för utövarna men ibland också för publiken.

Och jag tror att man kan förstå skämtandet i eldshowen som vi såg som ett slags försvar mot att exploateras på nytt på det här sättet. Genom att driva med genuiniteten, kommersialiseringen och maktförhållandet mellan underhållare och publik, så tillåts allt det komma fram i ljuset, samtidigt som det i sig bidrar till underhållningsvärdet och därför inte är ‘alltför’ utmanande. Det är fortfarande underhållning, och med skrattet bekräftar vi det. Samtidigt blir skrattet en slags bekräftelse på att vi har förstått åtminstone något av kritiken som bor i skämten.
