Att lära sig språk ska helst vara sådant där man gör av bara farten. Någon säger hi, och man förstår att det är en hälsning. Så testar man den på någon annan och får ett hi tillbaka. Så att nästa gång någon säger hi, så vet man vad man ska säga, då är man själv den som säger hi tillbaka. Det är så vi lär oss språk när vi är små. Långt från skolbänkar och grammatikböcker och Google Translate. Man hör, man ser, och sedan härmar man.

Vi pratar svenska med Fabian, förstås. Så det är ju det språk som han pratar allra mest, än så länge. Men när han leker själv på sitt rum, då leker han på engelska.

Det är klart att han leker på engelska, för det är så han har lärt sig att leka. På lekplatsen, på dagis, bland vänners barn, så ser han hur barn leker. Ser och tar efter. Och det är klart att den lek han sedan gör sker på det språket. Hans dagis är i och för sig spansktalande och visst blandar han in lite spanska också (yo Fabian, och no quiero! - alltid sagt med utropstecken). Men de flesta barn som han leker med pratar engelska.

Och det är ju bra. Han lär sig andra språk och det är fantastiskt.

Ändå tror jag att det skulle vara bra för hans svenska om han också fick leka lite med andra barn som pratar svenska. Någon gång ibland. För det blir en annan sak, en annan lärandeprocess än när han pratar med oss.

Därför blev jag så glad när jag fick kontakt med en annan svensk mamma med ett barn som var lika gammalt som Fabian. Ett annat barn som pratade svenska hemma.

Så vi träffades idag. Hade en playdate.

Och som de lekte.

De sprang runt runt runt och härmade varandras hopp och krumbukter, och så körde de med trehjulingen och lekte med sopkvasten och hällde ut alla legobitarna på golvet och provade glasögon och gungade gungstol och byggde klosstorn och körde tåg och hoppade i sängen och rymde lite, lite grann.

De hade med andra ord jättekul.

Vi pratade svenska, och de pratade svenska.

I en halvtimme ungefär. Sedan råkade någon av dem säga ett ord på engelska, en fras på engelska, och sedan var det kört. De sa that’s mine och I want that och I like it och watch out, och efter en stund så pratade de nästan bara engelska.

Och det visar hur oerhört stark omgivningens makt är. Trots att de båda pratar svenska hemma så är det naturligare för dem att prata engelska med varandra. Det är engelska som är defaultspråket, och det vet de.

Fast de bara är två år.
