…om att flytta till USA

Jag fick för ett tag sedan en fråga om hur det kommer sig att vi har hamnat där vi har hamnat. Varför vi flyttade till USA, vad vi gör här, och så vidare.

Och det är en rätt patriarkal historia, förstås.

Vi satsar på min mans karriär just nu. Ska man bli professor på ett bra svenskt universitet så är det nästan en förutsättning att man flyttar utomlands ett tag, åtminstone inom de naturvetenskapliga ämnena. Så det gjorde vi. Jag pausar min forskarutbildning under tiden och passar på att föda barn istället.

Det hade inte behövt bli Santa Barbara förstås. Vi tittade lite på OC (några timmar härifrån), Tyskland och England också. Men Santa Barbara är svårslaget. Paradisiskt, nästan. Efter att ha varit här på utbyten och semester några gånger så var det ett ganska enkelt val.

Dessutom kan jag jobba här också, och gjorde det i våras och somras, innan Harry föddes. Det är till och med en fördel för mig att vara här eftersom några av världens bästa samtalsanalytiker finns här. Win-win.

Det svåra är inte att flytta hit. Det svåra är att flytta härifrån.

Men vi jobbar på det.

  1. Å hade ingen aning om att du bor där du bor, men å så spännande, nu blev jag allt lite avis. Och vilken tur att det blev en win win för er båda. Lycka till med allt det där :-)

  2. Har vänner som flyttade för två år sedan till North californien pga mannens jobb. Barnen är idag 13 och elva år, och killen på 13 år är helt Amerikaniserad och vill INTE flytta hem, så det är inte helt enkelt.

  3. Santa Barbara låter helt underbart! Vi ville också till Kalifornien, men bilindustrin (maken gör post doc inom mechanical engineering) är tyvärr större i Michigan.

  4. Funderar också på att flytta till USA, med man som får jobb där. Men som medföljande undrar jag hur det skulle gå för mig. Hur fungerade det med arbetstillstånd för dig, fick du laglig möjlighet att arbeta med din svenska forskning från USA? Eller jobbar man på utan att uppmärksamma någon på det liksom?

    • Hej Johanna! Kul med USA-planer! :) Dina möjligheter att jobba beror lite på vilket visum du har (som studerande eller forskare har man J1, medföljande har då J2). Allra säkrast är att kolla med amerikanska ambassaden i Stockholm!
